Olie's adventures from the other side of the world
A very persuasive speech by Prof Ananya Roy regarding the reasons for the Walkout taking place today. Can’t imagine any of this happening in Singapore!
Exciting UC Berkeley walkout today! Protesting pay cuts, fee hikes. Protecting Public Education.

One month
I can’t believe I’ve been here in Berkeley for a whole month and a day already. Time is passing way too quickly and I’m thoroughly enjoying myself over here.
I always knew that exchange would be a really fun time, but I guess it was always such a distant thing that I didn’t really expect it to be a reality. I definitely think that I’ll return home, different.
Perhaps I always thought I could, but was never too sure how it’d be leaving home for an extended period of time. I’ve always wanted to study overseas, but never knew how I’d deal with being alone, in a foreign land. But I’ve come to realise that as much as I miss and love everyone back home, being away has a different vibe to it. It’s a whole new adventure and getting out of Singapore for a while is just to put it simply - refreshing.
Meeting new people, having different conversations, dealing with being independent, going to school in a different environment, is such an adventure.
This is one journey to remember fondly. Carpe diem.
Swine flu mania!
So there’s Swine flu going around I-house. People walking around with masks and everyone’s talking about it. Think more people are going to catch it in due time. So guess I’m going to be popping more Vitamin C’s and drinking more waaater :)
Received this in my email this afternoon:
Dear Residents of International House
I-House is working with campus to support the health of all our students - including preventing the spread of seasonal and H1N1 flu and assisting students who may be ill.
PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE TO PROTECT YOUR HEALTH AND THAT OF YOUR FELLOW RESIDENTS.
Are there students at I-House with H1N1 flu?
We have no formal confirmation of H1N1, although we do know of two residents who have self-reported symptoms consistent with seasonal and/or H1N1 flu. One resident has gone home to recover. The other is in room here at I-House. We will be checking with her daily, monitoring her progress, and she will receive meals delivered to her room, and will follow the precautions we outline below.

With your cooperation we are confident I-House and campus can address the challenges associated with flu season.
With best wishes for your good health,
Martin
